Shelter Dogs Currently Available for Adoption

The dogs listed below are currently available for adoption.  If you are interested in adopting one of these dogs, please visit the shelter in person. There is nothing like 15 to 30 minutes spent with one of the dogs to help you get to know that dog, and you can ask volunteer and staff people about the dog.

If you are from out of the area, call the shelter at (916) 808-7387 and give the staff person the animal number from the website along with the description/breed of the dog. The staff person can look up the number and let you know if the dog is still in the shelter, before you make the drive to visit. Sometimes it is difficult to get through on the shelter's lines, and staff availability to answer questions is very limited, so a visit is more productive.

NOTE: Since we do not conduct formal temperament screening, we do not warrant the temperament of any of the animals listed on this site. However, all animals are held out by the Sacramento City Dog Shelter as available for adoption to the public.

** The "web date" represents, generally speaking, the date 7 calendar days after the dog has become available to the public to adopt. That 7 day period is the minimum time the shelter agrees to hold the dog for adoption, IN ADDITION to the legal holding period. The agreement to hold the dog is not "guaranteed" though, because: 1), a dog can get critically ill and have to be taken out of adoption; 2), a dog can manifest aggressive behavior towards other dogs or people (and had not done so earlier), and therefore become not available to adopt; 3), an owner may come to find and redeem the dog, before the legal hold period is up, or any time thereafter. Finally, the City must take space limitations into consideration. If you are interested in one of these pets, please do not delay.
